Voice of the Drum: Supporting Student Transitions Through Culture
Indigenous Grade 5 students across the Abbotsford School District found their voice and deepening their connection to Indigenous culture through the Voice of the Drum program during the past school year.
This annual drum-making initiative is an unique learning experience that teaches students the cultural significance of drum teachings while helping them prepare for the transition to middle school. The program offers students an opportunity to learn from Indigenous Knowledge Keepers and community members, creating a safe space to share stories, ask questions, and celebrate cultural identity.
By learning to make and play their own drums, students are empowered to carry these teachings forward as they take their next steps in learning and life.
