Sandy Hill Students Win Regional “Sport of Reading” Tournament, Advance to Grand Challenge
The Abbotsford School District is proud to celebrate the success of the Reading Link Challenge team from Sandy Hill Elementary, who have won the Community Challenge and will now advance to the Grand Challenge on May 7.
After winning the Abbotsford Reading Link Challenge in March, the Sandy Hill team went on to represent the district at the Community Challenge on April 23rd, where they competed against winning teams from Chilliwack, Delta, Fraser Cascade, Langley, Maple Ridge, Mission, Port Coquitlam, and White Rock. Their hard work and teamwork paid off—they emerged as Community Challenge champions!
Next, they’ll represent the Fraser Valley Region as they compete in the Grand Challenge against top teams from Coquitlam, North Vancouver City, New Westminster and Surrey.
“We are so proud of the Sandy Hill team: Owen S., Ruba A, Armaan M, and Kennedy H,” said Cathy Erickson, Principal at Sandy Hill Elementary “They’ve shown incredible dedication and enthusiasm, and we’re excited to cheer them on in the Grand Challenge on May 7th!”
The Reading Link Challenge (RLC) is a literacy program that promotes the “sport of reading” among Grade 4 and 5 students through a series of fun, trivia-style competitions based on six selected books. A partnership between Fraser Valley Regional Library (FVRL) and local school districts, the program encourages teamwork, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of reading.
The challenge progresses through four levels:
- School Challenge – Teams compete within their school.
- Library Challenge – School winners face off within their FVRL branch.
- Community Challenge – Winning teams from all FVRL branches compete.
- Grand Challenge – FVRL’s top team competes against those from Coquitlam, North Vancouver City, New Westminster, and Surrey.
